Sydney Hushie, young and interested in the development of Africa by young Africans has been a youth advocate for HIV/AIDS for 17 years. Sydney, since 11 years has always believed in African youth and the role they have to play in the leadership of the continent.
Sydney is an Advisory Council member of the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS and is based in Accra Ghana. Until assuming the role of Advisory Council member, Sydney was a Programs Coordinator of GYCA responsible for the Regional and National Focal Points program of GYCA coordinating the work of 12 Regional and 52 National Focal Points. His role involves coordinating, providing technical and administrative support for the RFPs and NFPs.
His work is directly linked to GYCAs key strategy of identifying, training and mentoring new leaders for the AIDS response.

Sydney is currently a Youth Development Consultant of the British Council in Ghana where he is responsible for developing projects that supports the development and contribution of young people to development.

Sydney has a great interest in promoting youth activity in the media. This is demonstrated through work he has done with the Children and Youth in Broadcasting (a media advocacy group) in Ghana. As part of the work with CYIB, Sydney has trained over 400 children and young people in media advocacy, leadership and community mobilization and increased media access to children in the rural communities. He also has been for many years radio and TV presenter on a number shows targeted at young people’s involvement in development. A number of advocacy press articles have also been written all under the media project.

Sydney has been involved in national, regional and international level advocacy and engagement of young people. At the national level, he has written papers on employability skills of young people in Ghana and sub Saharan Africa for the British Council. He recently wrote a policy brief on employment and decent work for young people as part of processes for the Africa Population Conference.
Sydney has also been involved in advocacy with members of parliament on various Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of young people. Sydney led a team of young people to organize the youth program of the International Conference on HIV and STIs in Africa in Addis Ababa Ethiopia and Dakar Senegal. These conferences brought over 400 young people to both countries creating space for 24 young people in the main conference chairing, facilitating, presenting abstracts and papers; this largely increased visibility of young people at the conference and subsequently in the conference at large. He is currently working on the next youth program for the conference in Cape Town South Africa.
At the international level, Sydney has served a thematic chair for the Global Youth forum in Bali-Indonesia chairing "transitioning to meaningful employment theme of the conference of over 900 leaders from across the world. Sydney joined a team of young people in Oslo-Norway at the Young Leaders Summit organized by the Crown Princess of Norway and UNAIDS. A major outcome of this meeting is the initiation of the 5% investment for the Future Campaign. Also created was the HIV Young Leaders Fund, which is providing core and program funding to youth organizations.

Sydney is a member of the UN Interagency Task Team on young people, the Africa Civil Society Platform for Universal Access, the Global Fund advocacy platform among others.
Sydney has also in the past worked with the UNFPA, UNICEF, British Council, Plan International, UNAIDS in Ghana. He has worked in various capacities in Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS. Sydney has developed manuals, trainings, project concepts and evaluations for the above organizations.
Sydney believes in the power of volunteerism and supports youth participation in developing their community. Sydney for most part of his work has volunteered and cannot count the enormity of experience and opportunities available to him.
